Program Note
A sojourner is someone who passes through one place with a view to and longing for a more permanent and better one. The strength of the individual’s concept of the better place determines the degree to which they are able to thrive in their current situation. Lounsbrough’s work for chamber orchestra entitled, Sojourn, receives inspiration from the lives of family members who have clearly longed for something better and worked to improve their lives and those of their fellow sojourners. Each movement has a theme. The first movement depicts the life of a missionary in Brazil; the second, a young girl growing up on a ranch in South Dakota; the third, the sacrifices of a caregiving parent; and the fourth, a serviceman in World War II.
